The Insta360 ONE R Core Module is the brain of the modular ONE R action camera system. It mounts alongside a lens module on the battery base module, both available separately, and it offers a live view with touchscreen. The core is also where a microSD card of up to 256GB for the ONE R system goes, also sold separately. It also supports the optional ONE R 3.5mm microphone adapter via a USB Type-C interface, located next to the microSD card port on the side of the module behind a cover. In addition to a live display, the core module's display shows the remaining battery time and allows access to the ONE R system's settings.

The core module works differently with each lens module. When used with the 4K wide-angle mod lens module, the live view screen can be set as forward or rear-facing (rear for vlogging). When used with the 360 mod lens module, the live screen can be swept in all directions, so you can see your shot from all angles and get a full 360\u00b0 preview. While many other 360 cameras allow such a preview only in a mobile app, the ONE R system offers this both in the camera and in the accompanying app.
